Swim Cap: Does Double Capping Help

Frankz Zboncak

So, you have your latest swim cap picked out and ready to go. You’ve already double-checked the fit for head size, so what’s next? Double-capping! But does it really make a difference? Well, according to some people in the know, yes it does. So before you hop into the pool this summer and start swimming laps like nobody’s business (which is always fun), read on for more information about this common practice of swimmers everywhere.

Keep your head warm in cold water

Double caps can keep your head warm in cold water, but it’s not recommended for open water swimmers. The “hat head” that you may experience with a double cap can result in more severe damage to your hair than just wearing one swimcap alone!

The best thing about the single-layer caps is they keep icky things like chlorine and salt out of our locks, so if this matters (and let me tell ya – some people are really sensitive), then these would be better suited as well because there isn’t any extra barrier against those harmful chemicals trying their darndest on reaching us through another layer or two!! So does double capping work to keep our head warm? For most recreational swimming purposes I think we’re okay without going overboard into too much detail here.

Keep your goggle straps from falling down

Double caps can keep your goggle straps from going down your face. Double capping may provide more comfort and stability, and you can tuck the straps between 2 layers of your caps, and that will prevent the straps from running wild.

Increase your performace

Freestyle

If you care about performance and time, double capping may help. You may notice the wrinkles from wearing a cap. Those wrinkles may increase drag, so it’s completely normal if you want to remove those wrinkles. Double capping is the solution you may look for. For most recreational swimmers, double capping may not significant improvement and it’s not worth the trouble for wearing 2 caps. But for professional swimmers, that reduced drag may be the difference between a win and a lost.

Keep your hair in place

Double caps can keep your hair in place better, and you may not have to worry about hair tangles. Double capping is a must-do for long haired swimmers, because they usually need more protection from chlorine due the length of their hairs. Double capping will provide that extra tightness to your hair.

Prevent chlorine from your hair

Double caps can keep your from chlorine and salt water, and it can also keep your hair healthy.

Swimmer's hair

There will be less damage to the cuticles of you hairs if they are double capped from chlorine in pool water or saltwater on a beach visit because there is almost no contact with chemicals for those few minutes that swimmer wear two caps together before removing them once inside.

So if you’re troubled by having swimmer’s hair, double capping might be your solution.

Double capping is time consuming

However, there is a drawback to double capping: it can be very time consuming. If you are not good at doing your hair on the go or in front of other people and need more than one minute for styling process then this might just complicate things even further with two caps involved.

Double capping may increase your body temperature

Wearing double caps also increase the temperature on your head, especially on a hot day. Some people find having two caps on at the same time uncomfortable and might even cause headaches or dizziness. But, for those who can’t stand chlorine’s effects to their hair then double capping is a great way of avoiding that problem altogether.”

Final thought

All in all, it depends completely on your situation to use double capping. As all things, double capping has its pros & cons, so choose wisely and have fun swimming.
